New rules and guidelines on minimising the use of physical restraint in schools and kura and better understanding the reasons for \u0101konga distress, took effect from 7 February 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The new rules and guidelines have a strong focus on prevention. They were created in response to calls from educators, parents and disability groups for more clarity on the use of physical restraint in schools, and what is acceptable physical contact.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
All teachers at TPI have completed the mandated learning module on reducing stress, acceptable physical contact and physical restraint. All teachers are automatically \u2018authorised\u2019 to use reasonable and proportionate physical restraint to prevent imminent harm including significant emotional distress.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A small group of support staff have also completed the learning module and will now undergo safe holds training with the MOE. Once completed, their names will be added to this notice for wh\u0101nau reference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
